A February report highlighted that at least two models in the iPhone 16 series, including the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max, will feature larger batteries. Recently, the iPhone 16 Pro Max has been the focus of renewed speculation, with experts predicting enhanced battery performance.

Analyst Insights on Battery Improvements

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will boast higher energy density in its battery cells. This increase in energy density (measured in Wh/kg) is expected to either extend battery life without increasing the battery size or maintain current battery life with a smaller battery. Kuo, however, has not disclosed the exact battery size.

The enhanced energy density will inevitably raise the device’s temperature. To counteract potential overheating, Apple plans to use a stainless steel battery case for the first time in an iPhone. Kuo explained on Medium that while stainless steel is not as effective as aluminum in dissipating heat, it offers superior durability and resistance to corrosion. This not only helps manage heat but also provides better overall protection for the battery and the iPhone system.

Potential Impacts on Future iPhone Models

Kuo suggests that if the new battery design for the iPhone 16 Pro Max is successful in mass production, it will likely be adopted for the iPhone 17 models next year. Sunway is expected to be the primary supplier of these stainless steel battery cases for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Earlier reports indicated that the iPhone 16 Pro variants might utilize stacked batteries instead of the traditional L-shaped cells, although Kuo did not comment on the design specifics of the power cells in his latest update.
