Sony FX5 ship dates are finally firm.
US mid-November. Japan November 20.
After months of preorder backlog and production delays, Sony Japan locked a Friday, November 20 launch. North American retailers are lining up mid-November windows. UK and some EU orders now point to January. Here is what that means if you are choosing between the FX5 and the FX3.
Direct answer: Sony Japan will sell the FX5 on November 20, 2026. US stores are quoting mid-November, with several North American confirmations around November 8-9 and broader retailer windows through about November 8-15. Sony UK listings have slipped from mid-November into January. The camera still sits above the FX3 for open gate, internal X-OCN RAW, and triple-base ISO, but it has no built-in ND, so daylight cinematic shutter still needs an external VND/CPL.

When does the Sony FX5 actually ship by region?
On October 28, 2026, Sony Japan published a firm on-sale date for the FX5 and related accessories: Friday, November 20, 2026. That notice also extends the Cinema Line FX5 launch campaign purchase window through January 12, 2027.
In North America, retailer pages and trade reporting now cluster around mid-November. SonyAlphaRumors reported final confirmation of November 8-9 shipments from North American stores. Digital Camera World independently describes a US mid-November window while noting that Sony UK orders that once showed mid-November now list a January ship date.
Why was the FX5 delayed in the first place?
Sony announced the FX5 on July 22, 2026 as a compact Cinema Line body between the FX3 and FX6. Demand hit hard: the camera was effectively backordered within about 24 hours. Sony Japan first apologized for preorder volume delays, then in August cited unspecified production issues that pushed a hoped-for August availability into an open-ended wait.
That is why today’s dates matter. For the first time since the summer delay cycle, Japan has a calendar day, US retailers are publishing mid-November ETAs, and UK buyers finally have a clearer (if later) January expectation instead of a floating “soon.”
What is the Sony FX5, and how is it different from the FX3?
The FX5 is not an FX3 II by another name. Sony is positioning it as the next step up in the handheld Cinema Line, with a 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS sensor, 5K open gate, internal X-OCN RAW, and a triple base ISO path (800 / 4,000 / 12,800). It drops stills mode entirely. List pricing sits around $4,899 body-only and about $5,499 with the XLR handle, versus an FX3 that still lands near $4,298 with the XLR handle included.

Launch-day recording is already strong: 5K 60p open gate and 4K 120p are expected at ship. The headline high-speed and fuller open-gate rates, including 4K 240 and the complete open-gate frame-rate set, arrive later with firmware v2 in 2027. If your next job depends on those exact modes, price the wait into the upgrade.

Should you order the FX5 or stick with the FX3?
Order the FX5 if open gate framing for multi-aspect delivery, internal X-OCN RAW, or the middle base ISO at 4,000 is already costing you time on the FX3. The stacked sensor, stronger IBIS claim, AI subject detection (human / animal / bird), 32-bit float audio path via compatible accessories, and optional DVF-EL1 viewfinder are the practical day-to-day upgrades, not brochure padding.
Keep or buy the FX3 if your work is mostly 16:9 4K, you already own XLR-handle-based audio, you still need the occasional still, and the roughly $600-$1,200 gap (depending on whether you compare body-to-body or handle-included kits) buys lenses, media, or lighting instead. The FX3 remains a serious camera in 2026, not a consolation prize.
Wait on firmware v2 only if 4K 240 or the fuller open-gate rates are non-negotiable for a booked show. Everyone else can treat v2 as a free later unlock rather than a reason to cancel a mid-November US preorder.
The daylight exposure gap: no internal ND on the FX5
Unlike the FX6, the FX5 has no built-in electronic ND. Outdoors at a cinematic 180-degree shutter, that means you still need a way to cut light without slamming the iris shut or raising ISO into the wrong base. For most Sony E-mount primes and zooms, that is a front-mounted variable ND with CPL, not a menu setting.
If you are building a new FX5 kit around one or two workhorse lenses, a locking VND/CPL keeps exposure and reflection control in one ring and survives quick lens changes better than a loose stack. Match the filter to your lens thread; an 82mm kit covers a lot of Sony cinema and stills glass with step-up rings when needed.

Buy the FX5 if open gate and internal RAW are already on your shot list. Stay on the FX3 if the body you have still clears the brief, and plan external ND either way for daylight 180-degree shutter work.
