Apple’s latest venture into artificial intelligence, dubbed Apple Intelligence, was introduced at WWDC 2024. Set to be part of the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia updates, this advanced AI feature will be supported on all iPads and Macs equipped with the M1 chip. However, when it comes to iPhones, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be compatible with Apple Intelligence.
Some critics argue that by not extending this new AI functionality to older iPhones, Apple is pushing customers to buy the latest models. However, Apple has refuted these claims, providing clear reasons for the requirements of Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 15 Pro.
Why Apple Intelligence is Limited to the iPhone 15 Pro
In an interview with John Gruber from Daring Fireball during WWDC, Apple’s SVP of Machine Learning and AI, John Giannandrea, shed light on why Apple Intelligence is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models. Giannandrea mentioned that while it is technically possible to run these AI models on older devices, the performance would be so slow that it wouldn’t be practical or useful.
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing, also dismissed the idea that these requirements are merely a tactic to boost sales of newer models. He pointed out that if that were the case, Apple would have restricted the new AI feature to only the latest iPads and Macs as well.
The Power Behind the iPhone 15 Pro
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are powered by the new A17 Pro chip, which features a 16-core Neural Engine. This Neural Engine is twice as fast as the A16 chip found in the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models. Both Pro models also come with 8GB of RAM. It appears that a minimum of 8GB of RAM is a prerequisite for devices to support Apple Intelligence.

Availability of Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence will be included in the upcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia updates, and will be available for free to all compatible devices. The public release of these operating systems is expected to occur this fall, typically around mid-to-late September.
