Compared to its predecessor, the M2 boasts some significant design enhancements that make it even more user-friendly. The installation process remains the same, starting with attaching the blank frame, followed by your filter and then the lens cap. However, you’ll immediately notice a sleek black neutral appearance that replaces the previous color-coded filters. This aesthetic upgrade not only looks great but also minimizes distraction during your creative process.
Filter Ratings at a Glance
One of the most notable changes is the way we display filter ratings. We’ve made it easier than ever to identify a filter’s characteristics by prominently displaying the ratings on three sides and the front. For example, an ND8 filter indicates a three-stop reduction in light. This eliminates the need to remember color codes and streamlines your workflow.
Improved Lens Cap
We’ve also improved the lens cap. It’s now easier to remove, even when using a lens hood. We’ve introduced a convenient holder for the cap, making it a breeze to take it on and off your filter.

Compatibility with Previous Filters
Many of you may wonder if your previous Freewell magnetic quick swap filters will be compatible with the new M2 system. The answer is yes! You can continue to use all your existing filters with this upgraded system. While the design has evolved, the functionality remains the same.
CPL Filter Rotation
Rotating a CPL filter with the M2 system is a straightforward process. We’ve made it simple and intuitive to adjust the polarizer to achieve your desired effect.
Stacking Filters and Using Lens Hoods
You have the flexibility to stack filters with the M2 system. However, please keep in mind that stacking filters may result in a loss of sharpness and potential vignetting, depending on your lens. Additionally, you can use your lens hood seamlessly with this filter system.
Compatibility with Different Focal Lengths
We’ve extensively tested these filters and found no issues when using them at various focal lengths. Whether you’re shooting at 16 millimeters on a full-frame camera like the Sony A7 Mark IV or Sony ZV1 with the 16-35 GM lens, the M2 filters deliver exceptional performance.
