Straight answers from Apple specs and the September 2026 launch, written for everyday buyers deciding between Pro and Pro Max.

iPhone 18 Pro lasts up to 24 hours typical use and 36 hours of video; Pro Max reaches 30 and 45. Both share the same cameras and A20 Pro chip. U.S. pricing starts at $1,199 for Pro and $1,299 for Pro Max. Versus 17 Pro, the big leap is variable aperture plus Pro controls.

How long does the battery last?

Up to 24 hours of typical use on iPhone 18 Pro, and up to 30 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Apple also quotes video playback up to 36 hours on Pro and up to 45 hours on Pro Max (streamed video up to 33 and 40 hours). Those are lab-style estimates. Real days vary with brightness, 5G, gaming, and camera use.

Charging is quicker this generation too. With a compatible 60W-class USB-C adapter that supports Adjustable Voltage Supply, Apple says iPhone 18 Pro can reach about 50 percent in around 15 minutes. MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging can reach about 50 percent in 30 minutes with a suitable charger. On Pro Max, five minutes of wired charging can add around seven hours of video playback.

Compared with last year, Apple says Pro gains a few hours of video playback over iPhone 17 Pro, while Pro Max sees a larger jump over iPhone 17 Pro Max. eSIM-only models in markets such as the U.S. use the space that used to hold a physical SIM for a bit more battery.

Pro or Pro Max: which should I buy?

Choose by size and battery, not by camera.

Both models share the A20 Pro chip, the 48MP Pro Fusion camera system with variable aperture, Pro controls, Camera Control, and the same storage ladder. The practical differences are the display and endurance.

A simple rule: if you already liked last year’s Pro size, stay on Pro. If you always wanted more screen and fewer mid-day charges, Pro Max is the safer pick. There is no camera advantage either way.

How much does it cost?

iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299.

Those U.S. launch prices are for 256GB. Both models also ship in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Apple’s monthly financing examples at launch were about $49.95 per month for Pro and $54.12 per month for Pro Max over 24 months (subject to credit approval and carrier terms).

U.S. starting prices

$1,199 Pro. $1,299 Pro Max.

Both begin at 256GB. Higher storage steps up the price. Trade-in credit and carrier promotions can cut what you pay today.

Apple Trade In at launch listed roughly $175 to $885 in credit for eligible iPhone 13 or later devices, depending on condition and model. Select carriers also advertised larger credits when you trade in a qualifying phone. Always check the current Apple Store and carrier offer pages before you buy, because promotions change.

  • 256GB: fine for photos and casual video if you offload to iCloud or a computer.
  • 512GB: the practical sweet spot if you shoot a lot of 4K, ProRes, or keep large photo libraries on-device.
  • 1TB / 2TB: for heavy creators who keep projects local or travel without easy backup.

Is the camera better than iPhone 17 Pro?

Yes. The Main camera is the real step up.

iPhone 17 Pro already had a strong 48MP Fusion triple-camera setup. iPhone 18 Pro keeps that family and changes the Main camera the most: a six-blade variable aperture with four stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4. Apple pairs that with a new sensor and imaging pipeline aimed at better low light and more detail deeper in group photos.

You also get new Pro controls in the Camera app for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and a live histogram, plus updated Photographic Styles with texture and grain controls, and Apple Reference Image for verifying what the sensor captured. Ultra Wide and tetraprism Telephoto (including optical-quality 8x) remain in the same 48MP Fusion class, so zoom reach is familiar if you are coming from 17 Pro.

Who should upgrade from 17 Pro? Anyone who wants optical aperture control, clearer manual tools, or the battery and A20 Pro gains. If your 17 Pro already shoots what you need and storage is fine, this is a nicer camera year, not a must-swap for every owner.

If you want a simple mount-ready start for lenses and light control later, the Freewell iPhone Pro Filmmaker Starter Kit pairs a MagSafe 17mm-slot case with a magnetic VND 1-5 and Bluetooth grip.

How does Camera Control work?

Camera Control is the side button built for the Camera app.

Press lightly to launch Camera, press more firmly to take a photo or start video, and swipe to adjust controls Apple lists as exposure, depth, zoom, cameras, styles, and tone. It is meant to keep your thumb on a physical control so you can shoot without hunting on-screen buttons.

On iPhone 18 Pro, Camera Control still works as that quick hardware shortcut. Separately, Apple added Pro controls inside the Camera app so you can dial aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and watch a histogram. Think of Camera Control as the fast physical trigger and swipe strip, and Pro controls as the deeper manual panel when you want to craft a shot.

Quick buying checklist

Need pocketable and all-day enough? Get Pro. Want the longest battery and biggest screen? Get Pro Max. Upgrading mainly for camera control? The variable aperture and Pro controls are the reasons to leave a 17 Pro behind.

How much does it cost?
In the U.S., iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 for 256GB. Both offer 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Prices rise with storage; Apple Trade In and carrier deals can lower the out-of-pocket cost.
Is the camera better than iPhone 17 Pro?
Yes on the main camera. iPhone 18 Pro adds a variable aperture (f/1.48 to f/4) plus Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and histogram.
